Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Liege, in the heart of the Belgian Ardennes, celebrates the Christmas story with "Creche de Provence", a nativity scene featuring more than 100 animated figures, sculpted last century. Next to the "living crib", on Place du Marche, is Belgium's biggest Christmas market: more than 120 illuminated chalet stalls selling traditional Christmas goodies, such as baked quails, waffles and, of course, those delicious premier Belgian chocs.

The courtly ladies of ancient Japan liked nothing better than a spot of Battledore, particularly at this time of year. Battledore is a badminton- like game traditionally played around New Year and although the sport is no longer actually played, this seasonal tradition is still marked in the Asakusa temple in Tokyo by a three-day festival - the Hagoita Ichi. The Battledore fair has hundreds of ornamental bats for sale with stalls open from 10am-9pm daily. For something a little more serious you could head to the Edo-Tokyo Museum for a two-day Japanese storytelling festival (19-20 December). Although the stories will be of the humorous variety, don't expect to be rolling in the aisles; this is a very traditional, formalised art with a long, distinguished history. You would expect very old jokes told with sombre faces and in reverent tones.

Bikol Pastores is a Christmas celebration unique to South Luzon's Albay province. The region's capital, Legaspi, is the site of a festival believed to have originated with singing shepherds who once took to the streets in a colourful procession to honour Christ's birth. Today the city's young men and women dressed as pastores dance through the city's main thoroughfares singing that shepherd's favourite "Pastores A Belen".
