OVERVIEW

In 1992, Barcelona famously hosted the Olympics. A long way from the Spanish mainland, the Carayon family also felt like they had struck gold with an acquisition of a listed building. They began a painstaking salvage operation to re-establish the grandeur of an 18th-century mansion that had been left abandoned.

OUR REVIEW

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

Boutique Hotel San Roque is a 50-minute drive from Tenerife North Airport, and within an hour and five minutes of Tenerife South Airport. Tour operators were sceptical about whether Garachico was worth more than a day trip but travel writers' positive reviews of the port's first hotels convinced tourists to sleep over. "Make the ocean your own path", says El Sargo Carbon's Omar Páez, who prepares Atlantic hot dogs using marine sausages.

By plane: flights from London, Birmingham and Manchester to Tenerife take around 4 hours 30 mins. The hotel is an hour's drive from Tenerife South airport. Book flights to Tenerife.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

Classically Canarian by design, the hotel's style is a revival of Bourbon Spain with an injection of 20th and 21st-century art. The ambience is that of a modern gallery, a brook of low-level conversation rather than a rush of noise. The owners restored the exterior to its original red.

THE FACILITIES

You don't notice the staff at Boutique Hotel San Roque as they blend into the background. But they are more than happy to help when asked about things to see and do in the area. There is a gorgeous courtyard swimming pool and a rooftop solarium to catch some rays.
