OVERVIEW

As a resort, Playa del Inglés was infamous despite being home to one of the most beautiful beaches on Gran Canaria. It's now been prettified, thanks to the likes of forward-thinking hotels such as Bohemia Suites & Spa. Here, snazzily-dressed mixologists are serving you rather than bored bartenders of yore.

OUR REVIEW

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

Despite its name, Avenida Estados Unidos is one of Playa del Inglés' quieter streets. You're above the beach rather than directly on it, but it's a five-minute walk to feel the golden sand underneath your toes. Walk 250 metres to La Palmera Sur, a restaurant mashing up specialities like Caesar Salad Makis with crunchy free-range chicken.

By plane: flights from London, Birmingham and Manchester to Gran Canaria take around 4 hours 30 mins. The hotel is a 25-minute taxi ride from the airport. Free parking on-site. Book flights to Gran Canaria.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

A boutique hotel with bottle, Bohemia Suites & Spa dares with its audacious design. The only remnant of the old Hotel Apolo is the wooden staircase which was somehow transported from China. In terms of ceramics, the ornate tableware at 360° is the brainchild of the playful potter, Gloria Mirabell i Creus.

THE FACILITIES

Bohemia Suites & Spa is more than a hotel; it's an experience. LaBoh in the lobby is a collaborative creative space where guests are free to participate in thought-provoking courses, seminars and workshops. A well-equipped gym is open 24 hours a day, although you have to reserve a place in advance.

BED AND BATH

At 28 square metres, the Deluxe Doubles are a bit of a squash and a squeeze. By contrast, the Junior Suites are more than double the dimensions. A luminous balcony and outdoor furniture glow at night. The resident gnomes are quirky and as much tongue out as placed in cheek.

Room types: Studio Deluxe, Studio Suite, Deluxe Double, Junior Suite, Sky Suite

Key amenities: ensuite bathroom, Molton Brown toiletries, bathrobe and slippers, tea and coffee facilities, TV, free Wi-Fi

FOOD AND DRINK

Dress down for casual nibbles in the Sapphire Pool Bar, or put on your glad rags for pre-dinner drinks at Atelier Cocktail Bar, imaginatively prepared by Raimondo Palomba and the team. Enter the sumptuously-attired 360° for a gastronomic rollercoaster ride. Tasting menus guide you through the culinary traditions of the Canary Islands.

360°: à la carte fine dining, contemporary cuisine, seafood, steaks. Open daily for breakfast and Weds-Sun for dinner.

Atelier: cocktails and drinks.
