Travel by numbers: Rotterdam - Vertical city hits new heights in industrial-chic design
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Designed by Dutch architect, Rem Koolhaas, it is due to be completed this Friday following a four-year development that has seen the gleaming "vertical city" rise from the Wilhelmina Pier. It will hold office space, luxury apartments, shopping outlets and a 280-room Nhow Hotel (derotterdam.nl).
99 The starting price, in euros, of a double room at Mainport Hotel, Rotterdam's newest five-star, which opened in May. A testament to the city's multicultural mix, it features Middle Eastern interiors, an Australian restaurant, Finnish sauna and a Turkish hammam. Rooms come with whirlpool baths, flat-screen TVs and Malin+Goetz toiletries (mainporthotel.com).
24 The length, in kilometres, of the Nieuwe Maas river, which runs through the city, before spouting out into the North Sea. Sights on the south bank include the landmark Hotel New York (hotelnewyork.nl), which served as the main office of the Holland America Line, before being converted into an industrial-chic hotel. There's also the Las Palmas building, home to the Netherlands Fotomuseum (nederlandsfotomuseum.nl), with the largest collection of work by Dutch photographers in the country, and an outstanding restaurant by Dutch TV chef Herman den Blijker (hermandenblijker.nl). On the north bank, the action revolves around the Witte de Withstraat (wittedewith.nl), which teems with boutiques and galleries.
172,000,000 The estimated price, in pounds sterling, of paintings that were stolen from the Kunsthal museum in an art heist that took place last year. The theft prompted an international search for the masterpieces, which included works by Picasso, Monet and Matisse. Although they have still not been recovered, three men are standing trial in Bucharest. The Kunsthal is currently closed until February, when it reopens with an exhibition on The Second World War in 100 Objects, a photography display by Martijn van de Griendt and a retrospective on the Finnish design house Marimekko (kunsthal.nl).
105 The area, in square kilometres, covered by Rotterdam's port, the largest in Europe and, until 2002, the largest in the world until it was supplanted by Singapore and Shanghai. Cruise into the city with P&O (poferries.com), which sails from Hull with fares starting at £75 return. By air, CityJet (cityjet.com) flies from London City and BA (ba.com) connects from Heathrow.
