This election is still a dead heat, according to most polls. In a fight with such wafer-thin margins, we need reporters on the ground talking to the people Trump and Harris are courting. Your support allows us to keep sending journalists to the story.

The Independent is trusted by 27 million Americans from across the entire political spectrum every month. Unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock you out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. But quality journalism must still be paid for.

Chalet Papillon Val d’Isère

One of the newest builds in Val d’Isère, this large luxury chalet is well-suited for families or larger groups. Spread across four floors, it has four double bedrooms, with an adjoining bunk room attached to the master suite. There is a swimming pool and hammam in the basement, while the open-plan top floor acts as the living area, with a separate kitchen, mezzanine lounge and dining room. The décor is a stylish combination of exposed brickwork, wood cladding and fluffy rugs.

A catered week in December costs from £11,480, based on eight adults and two children sharing, booked through Scott Dunn (020 3355 8746; scottdunn.com).

Chalet Zebra, Méribel

The recently renovated Chalet Zebra is a short walk from the centre of Méribel. With three floors, it sleeps up to 12 people. The design is more minimalist than traditional alpine, and the spacious living area features a large suspended fireplace as its centrepiece, surrounded by sofas and floor-to-ceiling windows. You’ll also find an outdoor sauna and sunken hot tub, as well as wrap-around terraces.

A catered week with flights from Gatwick and coach transfers costs from £1,159 per person with VIP Ski (0844 557 3119; vip-chalets.com).

Les Chalets de Layssia, Samoëns

Opening in December, these new luxury chalet-apartments combine traditional Savoyard architecture with contemporary design – think wood- pannelled walls, log fires, reindeer-decorated curtains and suede sofas. Each of the 55 apartments, which range from one- to four-bedroom, has its own balcony. Shared facilities include an indoor pool and spa. A free shuttle bus which takes you to the Grand Massif gondola is close by.

A self-catering week in a two-bed apartment costs from £269 per person through Peak Retreats (0844 576 0170; peakretreats.co.uk).

Petit MarMau, Courchevel

Positioned next to its big sister, Chalet MarMau, new Petit MarMau is a detached chalet sleeping just four guests. Located minutes from the centre of La Tania village, in Courchevel, it comes with an open plan living and dining area and large windows, plus plenty of ski storage. One en-suite twin bedroom is located just off the living area downstairs, while the spacious master bedroom is tucked upstairs and has its own private balcony.

A week’s half-board costs from £649 per person, including flights and transfers with Le Ski (01484 548996; leski.com).

Chalet Dalmore, Chamonix

This chalet, which sleeps 12, is the latest to spring up in the well-heeled resort of Chamonix. It’s contemporary and spacious, with high ceilings and panoramic windows. Theres’s an open-plan living area complete with animal skin rugs and hanging fire places, as well as a roof terrace, a cosy snug, a heated pool, a hot tub and a sauna. The five bedrooms are individually decorated with a few alpine touches, including large fur throws.

A catered week costs from £12,500 (0131 661 8603; chaletcragganmore.com/dalmore).

Chalet Jejalp, Morzine

For a classic chocolate-box-style chalet, check into this new offering in family- friendly Morzine. It sleeps up to 10 adults and four children, with a mix of double, twin, and family-sized bedrooms. There are traditional wooden walls, but also a distinctly modern two-storey glass wine cellar. There is also a large dining room, bar, pool table, cinema room, sauna and an indoor hot tub.

A catered week in January costs £15,975 through Consensio (020 3393 0833; consensiochalets.co.uk).
