Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Verbier is both a top-quality resort and undisputed fun capital of the Alps, and those who want to join James Blunt, Ronan Keating and Lawrence Dallaglio in the Coco Club after midnight should consider Ski Verbier's new Treize Etoiles complex. Of the matched pair of chalet apartments, the top one has an open roof space that gives it an airy penthouse feel. The flagship in Ski Verbier's 20-chalet portfolio is Septième Ciel, up the mountain – an elevated palace in which the tour highlight is the double bed shared by the Beckhams. But Treize Etoiles offers similar comfort in a more party-friendly location.

THE ROOMS

Treize Etoiles has four double bedrooms, three of them en suite, and a bunk room for up to four children. The rest of the chalet is open plan, with log fire, and the emphasis is on natural materials. The den has plasma TV with Sky Sports, and guests can sink into sheepskin loungers on the sunny terrace or wallow in the hot tub – perfect for après-ski champagne with a view of goings on in the street.

THE FOOD AND DRINK

Young chef Mark Austin and his partner, Kirsty, provide a warm welcome and quality service. Kirsty's teatime cakes and currant scones with cream and jam are alarmingly irresistible. Champagne and other drinks are offered before dinner, with canapés. But take care, as Mark often goes through the four-course barrier to serve extra delicious dishes just for the hell of it. Good wine is served, vintages are available as required.

THE EXTRAS

Treize Etoiles shares a spa – a chic black-and-white pebble concept incorporating a hammam and a sauna – with its sister chalet apartment. Verbier Touch can be booked for massages. Ski Verbier offers tuition packages with guru Warren Smith (warrensmith-skiacademy.com), who trains the stars.

THE ACCESS

Children welcome. Easy access by lift, no steps but no wheelchair showers.

THE BILL

Chalet Treize Etoiles sleeps 10 – from £8,650 per week to include breakfast, afternoon tea, drinks with canapés and four-course dinner with wine.

THE ADDRESS

Chalet Treize Etoiles, 20 rue du Centre Sportif, 1936 Verbier (020-7401 1101; skiverbier.com).
