From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. The Trump administration has announced that it's attempting to end the criminalisation of homosexuality around the world.
The global campaign was announced by the administration on Tuesday in Berlin by Richard Grenell, the US ambassador to Germany and the highest-profile openly gay person in Trump's team.
Their efforts will be mostly concentrated on regions such as the Middle East, Africa and the Caribbean, where they will be working with the EU, UN and the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe.
Grenell told NBC news:
Homosexuality is still illegal in 72 different countries around the world and, although the Trump administration's announcement seems genuine, it's a tad shortsighted.
Since being in office Trump and his team have made several efforts to suppress LGBT+ people in the US, including the banning of trans people from the military and Mike Pence's strong anti-LGBT+ stance.
Many people including activists and LGBT+ organisations have been quick to point out this incredible bit of hypocrisy from the Trump administration.
