Weekly global technology agenda: CeBIT, Shorty Awards, Global Ignite Week

The week of March 1 will be overloaded with product releases and news coming from the world's largest digital IT and telecommunications event, CeBIT, taking place in Hannover, Germany. Across the oceans in New York City, the Shorty Awards (otherwise known as the‘Golden Globes of Twitter') will be awarding those who made the most difference on microblogging site Twitter with their sub 140-character posts during 2009.

Global Ignite Week

Global Ignite Week is comprised of an unconventional series of conferences held in pubs, theaters and clubs around the world. Speakers at the events showcase new ideas in bite-sized pieces. In 2010 there will be approximately 65 Ignite events taking place in various locations around the world. The Ignite motto is "enlighten us, but make it quick." As such, each participant is given five minutes on stage and can present only 20 slides. The events, which have been taking place since 2006, can be summed up as a "hectic night of geek contests, five-minute talks, and beer." CeBIT 2010

In 2009, 4,300 exhibitors from 69 countries and more than 400,000 visitors made their way to Hannover for CeBIT. 2010's event is expected to be even bigger. Visitors to the world's largest digital IT and telecommunications event will be able to take part in a forum of "international networking, knowledge transfer and trend-setting." CeBIT 2010 highlights will include a new "Next Level 3D" floor space, international demonstrations of green technologies and a new presentation called "Advanced Office & Conference Solutions."

The Shorty Awards

The Shorty Awards bring attention to people and organizations who have posted the most interesting comments on the microblogging site, Twitter, in less than 140 characters during 2009. The awards ceremony, familiarly referred to as the 'Golden Globes of Twitter' will take place on March 3 in New York for the second year. Official Shorty Awards will be given to tweeters in the fields of art, advertising, celebrity, design, humor, innovation, music, politics, science and 'weird' among others.
