Google has a treat for searchers on this, the day same-sex marriage was legalised in the US

Upon the announcement that the United States would legalise same-sex marriage, vast swathes of the internet erupted in celebration.

Including your friendly neighbourhood search engine Google.

Much like the doodles that adorn the world's most visited website on days of some significance, Google has drawn a row of rainbow mini-people holding hands to mark this historic Supreme Court ruling — if you search the term 'same-sex marriage,' that is.

There's a heart on the left-hand corner, segmented into a myriad of pretty colours, and the row of people on the right have even tinier hearts between them

Just one day after striking down the final attempt by Republicans to kill Obama's signature healthcare law, the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS for short) determined that the US constitution gives same-sex couples the right to marry.

The razor-thin 5-4 margin was broken by Republican-appointed judge Anthony Kennedy.

As you'd expect, President Obama and leading Democratic Party presidential candidate Hillary Clinton embraced the decision.
