Hydrogen One: Bizarre smartphone costs $1,600 despite mystifying features

Its design, specs and price may change 'anytime and for any reason'

Camera company Red has launched an extremely expensive new smartphone that’s as baffling as it is surprising.

The firm has revealed very few concrete details about the Hydrogen One, but has made a multitude of vague but elaborate claims about it.

Strangely, it’s already up for pre-order, with models costing up to $1,595. It’s set to ship from the first quarter of 2018.

Red has warned potential buyers that it “will NOT be able to fill all orders on time due to display production limitations. We will NOT guarantee these prices at the time of release.”

It also says that the handset’s design and specs may change “anytime and for any reason”.

The Hydrogen One will feature a 5.7-inch “holographic” display that sounds like it will deliver a 3D viewing experience without the need for glasses.

“Experience ‘look around depth’ in the palm of your hand, no glasses or headsets in sight,” says Red.

It’s also modular, meaning users will be able to attach accessories to it, such as camera attachments. However, these accessories will not be available at launch.

It will run Android, and Red says it will use an algorithm to convert stereo sound into “expansive multi-dimensional audio”.

The Hydrogen One also features a microSD card slot for expandable storage, a USB-C port for charging and a “special small token” for people who order it early.

The aluminium version currently costs $1,195 (£930) and the titanium version currently costs $1,595 (£1,240).
