Your support helps us to tell the story

My recent work focusing on Latino voters in Arizona has shown me how crucial independent journalism is in giving voice to underrepresented communities.

Your support is what allows us to tell these stories, bringing attention to the issues that are often overlooked. Without your contributions, these voices might not be heard.

Every dollar you give helps us continue to shine a light on these critical issues in the run up to the election and beyond

The global Facebook and Instagram outage that left potentially millions unable to access their accounts was caused by an unspecified “technical issue”, Meta has said.

Users found they were mysteriously logged out and not able to log back in, or could not open the app at all.

The outage was global, according to tracking website Down Detector, where tens of thousands of users reported being unable to access their account.

Meta spokesperson Andy Stone said the issue was resolved on Tuesday and apologised on behalf of the tech giant without revealing much in terms of details.

“Earlier today, a technical issue caused people to have difficulty accessing some of our services. We resolved the issue as quickly as possible for everyone who was impacted, and we apologise for any inconvenience,” Mr Stone said.

Meta probably wants an undo button

Tuesday’soutage at Instagram came just a day after it announced that it will be letting people edit and undo their direct messages (DMs).

Meta introduced it yesterday with a message that might be the exact words someone at its headquarters are saying to themselves now.

Russian internet hit by unexplained behaviour as Facebook and Instagram appear

Tuesday’s Facebook and Instagram outages come around after a week after strange occurrences on the internet in Russia.

Telegram, the country’s most popular messaging app, went down, along with other platforms such as YouTube and social media site Vkontakte.

At the same time, Instagram and Facebook users found they were able to get to those sites for the first time in two years.

Mark Zuckerberg stuns UFC 298 fans after appearing in corner of defending champion

Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta faced issues on Tuesday after major outages across its platforms Instagram and Facebook.

Back in January the tech entrepeneur stunned UFC fans as he appeared in the corner of Alexander Volkanovski as the Australian defended his featherweight title in Anaheim, California.

Social media platforms Facebook and Instagram back online after outage

Elon Musk mocked Meta on Tuesday after the company saw major outages on its platforms Instagram and Facebook.

But it’s not the first time the Tesla and X boss has butted heads with fellow tech giant Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook.

Last year, in a bizarre online feud, the pair went back and forth on social media, baiting each other about the prospect of a cage fight, before the argument seemed to peter out. In November Mr Musk appeared to reignite the feud.

Outage was not a cyber attack

#CyberAttack is trending on Twitter and many are expressing panic that their accounts have been hacked.

But there is no reason to think it was anything other than a standard (if very dramatic) technical problem caused by Meta itself. And that is what the company has seemingly indicated (see below).

‘Recovering from disruptions'

Meta’s business status page is now showing most of its services as “Recovering from disruptions”.

While it doesn’t run a similar page for its consumer products, you can imagine it would say the same: services appear to be recovering, even if they are not fully back yet.
