Burn hazard leads to recall of popular laptops

On June 30 Sony announced it would voluntarily recall 535,000 Sony Vaio laptops shipped to the US, Asia, Japan and Europe amidst fears the laptops may overheat and become a hazard to consumers.

The product recall involves Sony's VPCF11 Series and VPCCW2 Series (F and C-Series) Vaio notebook computers. The laptops have been on sale since January 2010.

Around 39 reports of deformed keyboards and casings have been linked to the temperature-control defect. No injuries have been reported.

"The computers are available in many colors and have "VAIO" on the front outside panel" said the US Consumer Product Safety Commission in a June 30 statement.

"The model numbers can be found on the bottom of the computers."

In January 2010 Acer voluntarily recalled 22,000 of their laptop computers due to a similar potential burn hazard.
