Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag follows pirate Edward Kenway through 50 different Carribean locations. Kenway is the grandfather of Connor, the main character of the game's predecessor, which was set during the American Revolution.
Black Flag is expected to feature full naval combat as well as a diving mode, all interspersed with the familiar Assassin's Creed trips back to the modern day.
Developers promise a game that gets moving more quickly than last year's offering, which was slammed for its sluggish opening.
Players will also be able to take to the seas to hunt vessels to board and plunder, gaining riches which can be used to hire a larger crew and upgrade the ship. The game will also feature appearances by famous pirates from history, including Blackbeard, developers have said.
