Apple is to begin production of a fifth-generation iPad in August this year, according to reports by DigiTimes.

The new iPad will be thinner and lighter than the fourth-generation model, according to the Taiwanese tech industry news website. It will have a streamlined bezel design similar to that of the iPad mini, sources say.

The display for the new device is expected to be supplied by LG Display and Sharp, with touch panels coming from TPK, the sources added.

Speculation over a fifth-generation iPad launch has been mounting for a while. Earlier reports hinted at either an April or October release. Apple took consumers by surprise with two iPad launches in 2012 and is playing its cards close to its chest.

Meanwhile sales of the iPad mini are surging ahead and are reportedly already outstripping those of the full size version.
