From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. Apple appears to be broadcasting eerie footage from inside of its own headquarters, hours before one of its biggest events in years.

Tim Cook and other senior Apple staff are set to take to the stage in Apple's own Steve Jobs Theater later today, announcing the company's new products. Unlike previous events, it will not be releasing hardware or software, but instead showing off new subscription services that allow people access to films, TV and news.

That event is set to be livestreamed through Apple's own website. And that video appears to have already begun: with strange footage from inside the theatre itself.

Video on Apple's website seems to show a completely empty auditorium. Those empty seats face towards a huge screen, on which is being broadcast video of a car driving up the I-5 – a highway that runs all the way up the west coast of the US, and past Apple's home in California.

The GPS display seems to show that the car will reach its destination a couple of hours before the event begins, at 10am local California time or 5pm in the UK. It appears to be screen capture of a vehicle that is running CarPlay, Apple's technology to allow a version of the iPhone software to run inside cars – and so probably is not a suggestion that Apple will be unveiling its long-rumoured electric vehicle.

The video appears to include a grainy effect, redolent of VHS. It occasionally flips between different views, in a way that recalls CCTV footage.

It appears not to be the first of the strange teasers shown on the live stream. Apple also broadcast footage suggesting that Kevin Durant was visiting Apple's headquarters – an apparent reference to one of the shows set to be announced for its Netflix competitor.

Apple's event is being covered live on The Independent as well as the creepy broadcast on Apple's website.
