Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

He landed himself in a whole lot of trouble after his request for bacon, jalapeño mac and cheese went so horribly wrong, gathering millions of views on YouTube in the process within days.

Now, 19-year-old University of Connecticut (UConn) student, Luke Gatti, has taken to YouTube again – only this time it’s to issue an apology for his actions which saw him be arrested.

The student was recently filmed late at night beginning a very expletive and physical dispute with a restaurant employee at his student union after being refused service for being drunk and drinking while underage on the premises.

After being tackled to the ground by staff until police arrived on the scene, Gatti was arrested and charged with breach of peace in the second degree and criminal trespass in the first degree.

‘Ashamed’ of his actions in the new online clip, Gatti apologises to all the staff in the restaurant – especially the manager who, he says, ‘was just doing his job’. He adds: “He gave me so many chances to walk away and I didn’t listen to him. I was just a complete a****le to him instead and no-one deserves to be treated that way, like, ever.”

Watch Gatti’s apology in full:

Acknowledging how he has problems he is addressing, he says being exposed online was a ‘serious wake-up call’, further apologising to all friends and family for ‘completely disappointing them and letting them down’ as well as to the university body, too, for ‘representing it so poorly’.

According to HuffPost, the student is still attending UConn, although a university spokeswoman said there will be a disciplinary process which could result in some sort of sanction.

And to top off Gatti’s apology? Addressing all those who have been offering donations of mac and cheese to the student who once wanted it so badly, he says: “Please, just send it to your local food pantry. There’s [sic] a lot of hungry people out there.”
