To get a real idea of what that involves, there's nothing better than meeting the people who do the job, so you can find out why and how they got into it, what they get out of it, and, frankly, how much they earn!
The British International Motor Show is a big event which allows you to do exactly that. Over half a million people are expected to be at the ExCeL exhibition centre in Docklands for this year's show. For the motoring masses, the Show provides a great introduction to opportunities in their favourite industry. Automotive Skills and their friends in organisations that represent the motor industry - including the Automotive Academy ( www.automotiveacademy.co.uk), City & Guilds ( www.cityandguilds.com), the Learning Grid ( www.learninggrid.co.uk), the Institute of the Motor Industry ( www.motor.org.uk), SEMTA ( www.semta.org.uk) and SMMT Industry Forum ( www.industryforum.co.uk) - are putting on a show too. It's called the careers village.
This won't just be your average, run-of-the-mill exhibition stand with a few things to drop in your carrier bag and not a lot more. Automotive Skills are gathering people from across the motor industry who'll talk to you about their experience and tell you how you can get in. There will be interactive displays that will show you why the motor industry needs your skills, whether you're great with people, a whizz with technology or like to get hands-on.
So, to meet people and find organisations that can make your career in the automotive sector come alive, head to the British International Motor Show; they'll be there to provide plenty of advice. The careers village will be open throughout the Motor Show, which runs from the 20 - 30 July at the ExCeL exhibition centre, near Custom House station on the Docklands Light Railway. The organisers are taking full advantage of the waterside venue, with world-class stunts on jet-skis, water-skis and power boats. Get down to Dock Rock for huge music acts - including A-Ha and Van Morrison. And, of course, there'll be manufacturers launching their latest road-going machines. What are you waiting for?
