Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

South Africa 294

New Zealand 94-1

A determined half-century by Bryan Young gave New Zealand the prospect of a big score in the est at Eden Park, Auckland.

he opener, undefeated on 62 at the end of the second day, showed great patience and technique against South Africa's pace attack. Allan Donald bowled with venom and Fanie de Villiers with great accuracy, but Young played a resolutely straight bat in the Centenary est.

he only New Zealand wicket to fall went in the final session when, with the score on 86, Darrin Murray edged a delivery from Hansie Cronje on to his pad and the ball ballooned to Gary Kirsten at short leg.

South Africa, having started the day at 153 for three, were dismissed after lunch for a disappointing 294.

he medium pacer Gavin Larsen wrapped up the tail after the eamers Danny Morrison and Dion Nash, playing his first est since recovering from a broken finger, had torn the heart out of the middle order with the new ball.

hree wickets fell with the score on 230 as the South Africans collapsed on a pitch offering movement off the seam and plenty of bounce.

he day should have belonged to Daryll Cullinan, but he threw away the chance of a century when he pulled Morrison straight to Murray at square leg for 96.
