Scherbo off the horse again
Vitaly Scherbo, the Olympic gymnastics champion, fell from the pommel horse for the second time in three days at the in Fukuoka, Japan. But the 23-year-old from Belarus, who won six golds at the Barcelona Olympics, made a spectacular comeback after his spill in the first apparatus of the men's all-round competition to share the bronze with Romania's Cristian Leric. Russia's Evguenei Chabaev, the European Cup winner, won the event with South Korea's Jung Jin-Soo second. In swimming, Fernando Scherer beat his team-mate the Olympic silver medallist Gustavo Borges, in the men's 100 metres freestyle, to win Brazil's first gold medal. Maria Valentina Vezzali took Italy's first gold when she beat Hungary's Ildiko Mincza 15-12 in the women's fencing individual foil final.
