Tempers flare ahead of UFC 269, Nunes-Pena feud dominates proceedings

Charles Oliveira retained the UFC lightweight title by submitting Dustin Poirier in the main event of UFC 269 on Saturday night, capping off a thrilling night of fights in Las Vegas.

Former interim champion Poirier was challenging for the undisputed belt for the second time in his career, but the American’s newest venture ended the same way as his previous attempt – with the ‘Diamond’ losing via submission. Poirier (28-7) failed to unify the lightweight titles in 2019 as he tapped out to a rear naked choke against Khabib Nurmagomedov, who then fought once more before retiring and relinquishing the undisputed gold.

In the meantime, Poirier fought his way back to the top of the division with three straight wins, including two against old rival Conor McGregor this year. Meanwhile, Oliveira (32-8) claimed the belt vacated by Khabib, knocking out Michael Chandler in May to become lightweight champion. It all led to this highly-anticipated main event in the final UFC pay-per-view of 2021, and the in-ring action delivered on the hype, with a blistering fight ending in the third round as Oliveira submitted Poirier with a rear naked choke.

In the co-main event, Julianna Pena also won via rear naked choke, submitting Amanda Nunes in the second round to become women’s bantamweight champion. The result marked one of the biggest upsets in UFC history.

Round 2

A slow start to the second round. Grazing punches and kicks begin to land for each man.

Ponzinibbio drives for a takedown attempt, pushing Neal back to the fence. Good defence from the American, but eventually he’s dragged down.

Lovely escape, though, and he goes after Ponzinibbio on the feet.

Round 1

Good one-twos here from Ponzinibbio.

He’s cut around his right eye, though.

Neal comes forward with a combination that ends with a high kick, but his opponent just evades again.

Accurate jab from Neal, then he kicks low and we’ll have another pause in the action – this time for an accidental low blow.

Round 1

Lots of feints early on. Heavy inside leg kick from Neal.

Ponzinibbio just evades a front kick aimed at his head.

Solid right hand by the Argentine after a brief pause in the action as he’s warned about outstretched fingers.

Again he’s warned.

Meanwhile, Neal (13-4) has seen an impressive winning run give way to back-to-back losses.

He was outpointed by Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson last December, then lost to Neil Magny via decision in May.

Ponzibinnio (28-4) was one of the scariest prospects at welterweight before an injury and illness-enforced two-year absence from the Octagon.

He returned in January, losing to Li Jingliang via first-round KO, but the Argentine responded by outpointing Miguel Baeza in June.

Two first-round knockouts to begin the main card.

Next up, a welterweight contest between Geoff Neal and Santiago Ponzinibbio.

This one could well lead to a third straight finish...

Kai Kara-France def. Cody Garbrandt via first-round knockout (strikes, 3:21).

A feinted jab set up the short right hand that first dropped Garbrandt. The next knockdown was a right hand as Garbrandt circled away against the fence.

Kara-France then poured it on and it might have even been a left that dropped Garbrandt the third and final time.
