McGregor appeared in court on Friday afternoon on charges of assault, following a violent backstage fracas after a press event at UFC 223.
He is charged with three counts of assault and one count of criminal mischief, after the altercation in a parking lot at the Barclays Centre in Brooklyn which left two UFC fighters injured.
He was released from custody on bail and ordered to return for a court hearing on June 14, with his bail set at $50k.
McGregor last fought in August 2017 when he stepped over into the sport of boxing to take on Mayweather, losing in ten rounds. And the undefeated American boxer could not resist a dig at McGregor when asked about the Irishman’s troubles.
“I feel that when you have reached such high status, you have to carry yourself in a classy way,” Mayweather told ringside reporter Jim Gray during live coverage of Jarrett Hurd’s victory over Erislandy Lara.
“Outside the ring, you have to carry yourself as a gentleman.”
Mayweather, who has a criminal past and long history of domestic violence, also discussed rumours of a rematch with McGregor – this time in the Octagon.
“Retirement has been great, but as you know and everyone knows, I go in retirement, and I come back,” he added.
“It is possible I do come back, but if I do come back, it has to be in the octagon.”
