Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Conor McGregor confirmed his intentions to become a two-weight world champion after his stunning knock-out win over Jose Aldo at UFC 194 on Saturday night.
McGregor stopped Aldo with one spectacular punch just 13 seconds into the first round, claiming Aldo's UFC featherweight title in Las Vegas.
The Irishman says that he now intends to move up to lightweight, but will not be relinquishing his featherweight strap.
"The options are there now," said McGregor. "Frankie [Edgar] had a good win, that could be for the featherweight belt, maybe the Jose rematch or maybe the 155lb strap.
"Options are a good thing in the fight game.
"I'll tell you one thing that won't be happening. If I move to the lightweight division, there's no way in hell I'm vacating that belt; that's not happening.
"I will have one belt on one shoulder and one on the other."
The shocked Aldo demanded a rematch after the fight.
“I think we need a rematch and that will be my fight. The trash talking didn’t affect me, I don’t care what he says,” he said. “Thanks to everyone watching in Brazil and thank you for the support. I will be back.”
