Motor racing

Only three drivers took part in the opening day of Formula One testing at Estoril yesterday. Michael Schumacher was fastest with a lap of 1min 22.14sec, his Ferrari team-mate, Eddie Irvine, clocked 1:23.00 despite a transmission problem. Gerhard Berger, who has switched to Benetton from Ferrari, managed a best lap of 1:23.89.
