There are no golden goals in racing and, this game goes on until the final whistle on 11 November. Bosra Sham put Henry Cecil (prize-money so far: pounds 1,868,447) in a commanding position in Saturday's Champion Stakes, but Cecil is still uncertain to land the trainers' title.
In a championship decided by prize-money he has a lead of pounds 50,360 over Godolphin's Saeed bin Suroor (pounds 1,818,087), but there are enough big races left this year for Godolphin's man to stop Cecil winning for the first time since 1990. There are 19 races carrying more than pounds 10,000 in added money to be run before the end of the turf season.
Cecil said yesterday: "I have got a few runners this week and next but I will not be having runners just for the sake of it."
This Saturday could be crucial, with pounds 75,000 in added money up for grabs in the Group One Racing Post Trophy Stakes for two-year-olds at Doncaster. Godolphin has paid pounds 30,000 to supplement Asas and Medaaly, but Cecil is a hard man to beat in the Doncaster contest. He has won it nine times, and is aiming Besiege, third in Ascot's Royal lodge Stakes, at the prize. "He has come on a lot since Ascot and should run well," Cecil said.
There is also the pounds 30,000-added St Simon Stakes at Newbury on Saturday. "I run Eva Luna in the St Simon and Dragonada will go for the Radley Stakes," added Cecil.
Saeed Bin Suroor runs Sunbeam Dance in the pounds 20,000-added Tote Silver Tankard Stakes at Pontefract today.
