Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Agnieszka Radwanska vs Sabine Lisicki

Radwanska

Who 24-year-old 4th seed from Poland (though raised in Germany).

Why you should be rooting for her Aga reached the final last year, taking a set off Serena Williams in the final, something only Maria Sharapova and Venus Williams have done at Wimbledon. Would also be the first Pole to win a Grand Slam. Daj spokój!

Bonus facts Studies tourism at the Polish Sport University in Krakow. Once proved her love of Jesus by spelling his name out in tennis balls for the “I Am Not Ashamed of Jesus” campaign.

Lisicki

Who 23-year-old from Troisdorf, Germany.

Why you should be rooting for her Her tears of joy after defeating Serena ought to be reason enough, since that’s what it took for serial winner Andy Murray to win over the mugs on Centre Court. Though, those damp eyes could be down to her allergy to grass. Which is even more reason to want her to win.

Bonus fact Has been known to indulge in a spot of pottery (her mum is an artist who works in ceramics).

Marion Bartoli vs Kirsten Flipkens

Bartoli

Who 28-year-old, 15th seed from Le Puy-en-Velay, France.

Why you should be rooting for her Playing in the 2007 Wimbledon final against Venus Williams, Bartoli used an injury time-out by Williams to sort-of join in with a Mexican wave. Sadly, still got thumped 4 and 1. In 2011 ejected her father and coach from courtside at Wimbledon during a three-set epic vs Flavia Pennetta – an action which will have all children of tennis parents cheering.

Bonus facts Is a keen amateur artist who’s inspired by Van Gogh, Manet and Monet.

Flipkens

Who: 27-year-old, 20th seed from Geel, Belgium

Why you should be rooting for her Because she plays in specs and speccies haven’t had a champion to root for since the glory days of Martina Navratilova. Also, would be first player with a name from a Beatrix Potter book to make a Grand Slam final. Also, never gone beyond round four of a slam and was ranked 262 last June.

Bonus facts Nicknamed “Flipper” but hasn’t been known to cannily rescue trapped children using sonar. Yet.
