Andy Murray has withdrawn from the singles at Wimbledon on Tuesday morning and will instead make his farewell from SW19 in the doubles alongside brother Jamie.

Murray was scheduled to face Tomas Machac this evening but the two-time champion announced on Tuesday morning that he has withdrawn having not made sufficient recovery following an operation on a spinal cyst 10 days ago.

A statement from Murray’s team read: “Unfortunately, despite working incredibly hard on his recovery since his operation just over a week ago, Andy has taken the very difficult decision not to play the singles this year. As you can imagine, he is extremely disappointed but has confirmed that he will be playing in the doubles with Jamie and looks forward to competing at Wimbledon for the last time.”

Murray’s match on Centre Court will be replaced by British No 1 Jack Draper’s match against qualifier Elias Ymer. On a packed second day of the tournament, 11 British players will be in action including Katie Boulter, the women’s and men’s No 1s. Both Boulter and Draper are seeded for the first time, with Boulter facing former semi-finalist Tatjana Maria.

Defending women’s champion Marketa Vondrousova opens play on the second day of play on Centre Court. The Czech will be followed by Novak Djokovic, who begins his bid for a record eighth title following last year’s five-set defeat to Carlos Alcaraz in an epic final. World No 1 Iga Swiatek also begins her campaign against former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin, in what is a rematch of the 2020 French Open final.
