Raducanu eased past Elise Mertens on No.1 Court with Carlos Alcaraz also victorious on a rain-hit day at Wimbledon
Emma Raducanu produced a stunning victory at Wimbledon, sweeping past Elise Mertens hours after confirming she will play alongside Andy Murray in the mixed doubles. Raducanu dominated the world No 33 and claimed a 6-1 6-2 victory in just 75 minutes to return to the third round of a grand slam for the first time since winning the US Open in 2021.
Murray was forced to pull out of his final singles match at the Championships after ruling that he had not recovered from a back operation in time. The two-time champion will play in the men’s doubles alongside brother Jamie on Thursday but his on-court swansong will continue in the mixed doubles alongside Raducanu, the former US Open champion.
Carlos Alcaraz continued his impressive start to his title defence with a dominant win after an early scare against Australian Aleksandar Vukic. In the final match of the day, world No 1 Jannik Sinner battled past compatriot and former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini in an epic four-set win, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-4) 2-6 7-6 (7-4), on Centre Court.

Berrettini cannot control the return and Sinner gets first shot at set point.
Sinner’s first serve at 6-4 is way too heavy, a powerful forehand has the perfect depth this time and Berrettini slices well wide and concedes a two-set lead.
Sinner bounces back to his chair and has the edge now despite almost two hours of gruelling tennis.

That is some shot from Sinner, a short backlift and then a powerful forehand that flies past Berrettini in a flash. 5-2 and he can sniff a two-set lead.
Berrettini searching for a few cheap points. He gets one with Sinner’s return drifting out and then catches a 134mph bullet down the line for an ace. 5-4 to Sinner and here we go...

Magic from Sinner to win the first point of the tie-break, a backhand down the line is too hot for Berrettini.
Berrettini blinks first at 1-3 and catches the net, a tough blow and a long way back now at 1-4.
But an error from Sinner, as he goes long, puts Berrettini back in it, they change ends and a roar from the crowd greets them as we resume at 4-2.

We go to the tie-break, Sinner was cool there and held with ease.
Now who will hold their nerve in the tie-break?

Such powerful, accurate serving from Berrettini and then the guts to come in and fight at the net.
A gorgeous backhand volley and he clenches his fist in delight, he’s 6-5 up and in with a great shot of pulling level in this match.

That’s a huge hold from Berrettini, he needed guts and patience as Sinner carved out a few break point opportunities.
Now the pressure swings back to Sinner.
The pair have battled it out for an hour, 45 minutes already. We remain on serve.

Berrettini finding some variation on serve, with the second serve kicking up to bamboozle Sinner.
As the rallies extend, Sinner looks in command, another unforced error puts Sinner in position to grab another break.
And Sinner pounces on that second serve and Berrettini is forced long. Break point.
Ace, Berrettini, pounded to the Sinner backhand, he barely tried to return it. And then another ace, this time down the middle, again to the Sinner backhand. Advantage.

This is some match, the speed and power on display is remarkable and now Berrettini’s tail is up.
Sinner, on the run, blasts a forehand into the net, game point and a vital chance to hold to solidify the break.
But now it’s Berrettini’s turn to net, deuce! A double fault arrives and Sinner is poised to break back immediately.
And he does, Berrettini launches a forehand beyond the baseline and he immediately knows what a great opportunity he’s missed. Still, he leads 4-3.

Huge moment! Berrettini gets what could be a crucial break of serve!
He brings up his first break point with a wonderful volley, a backhand scythed low over the net, only to punch his next forehand long. He knuckles his hands onto his hips and looks up at the sky – or where it would be if not for the roof.
A chance gone. The chance?
Thankfully for him, no! Two points later, Sinner finds the net!

The second set has stayed on serve so far. Both men bring so much power, especially with their serves of course, so the opponent’s service games have proved tough nuts for each Italian to crack.
There was a slip by Berrettini a few moments ago, but he was quick to give Sinner a thumbs-up and get back on his feet.
Berrettini’s outside-in forehand into the corner has worked nicely as a follow-up to his serve on recent points.
