*Novak Djokovic 0-0 James Ward
Novak Djokovic will serve first to get the match underway.
Novak Djokovic 1-0 James Ward*
An authoratitive start from Djokovic as his first serve is unreturnable, before he hits two aces to make a quick start. Ward hits the fourth point wide to the left and they don't get much easier than that for the world No 1.
*Novak Djokovic 6-0 6-6 James Ward
A wide forehand from Ward gives Djokovic the early advantage, but Ward fights back with a lovely backhandthat passes his opponent. Ward then produces an error as he again goes long, and Djokovic has a mini-break. Both engage in a number of slice shots, but it's Ward who comes up with the error and Djokovic leads 3-1. Ward then hits into the net and the set is slipping away from him. They change ends when Ward volleys long, and it's looking ominous at 5-1.
Novak Djokovic 6-0 7-6 (7-3) James Ward*
Djokovic tries to attack Ward's serve but pulls his shot wide. Ward then repeats the shot, and Djokovic has four set points. A slow Djokovic backhand is called long and Djokovic challenges, but it misses the line by some way. 6-3, and Ward is still struggling to survive, and he pulls a return wide right to hand Djokovic the second set.
*Novak Djokovic 6-0 7-6 0-1 James Ward
Despite that disappointment at the end of the second set, Ward holds serve to start the third in good fashion, capping the game off with an ace.
*Novak Djokovic 6-0 7-6 3-2 James Ward
Ward is coming up with a number of errors in this set, as he is forced into a long forehand before firing an unforced error into the net. However, Djokovic balloons a mis-hit long to offer a glimmer of hope, that sees Ward move ahead, but a brutal return had Djokovic back at 30-30. A clever backhand from Ward sees him place the ball just behind Djokovic as he sprints across court, but he then whips one wide to bring up deuce.
An emphatic serve down the middle has Djokovic stumped, but Djokovic saves te point when Ward slices into the net. Advantage Djokovic after a fifth double fault from Ward - he went the entire second set without one - but Djokovic returns long to let the chance slip. Ward follows up with a 125mph ace, but he's sent sprinting to the back of the court to return a ball that hits the top of the net. Djokovic cries out in anger as he hits wide by a long way, but when Ward sets up the perfect chance to hit his first serve-and-volley, he smashes it long after allowing it to bounce. Ward finally has the game though with two unreturnable serves from Djokovic.
