Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Second-seeded Sandrine Testud of France advanced to the third round of the $170,000 Croatian Bol Ladies Open today, defeating Croatian hope Jelena Kostanic 7-5, 6-2.
Testud, ranked 10th in the world, started slow in her first clay court game of the season, having to rebound from a 4-1 deficit.
But the finalist of this year's Pan Pacific tournament in Tokyo then took control of the game, breaking the 18-year-old Croat's serve again at 5-5 to serve out the set.
Kostanic showed flashes of talent with some sizzling passing shots but it was not enough to threaten Testud's entry into the third round.
Defending champion and fifth seed Corina Morariu of the United States made short work of Emmanuelle Gagliardi of Switzerland after squeezing through a first-set tiebreak, 7-6 (6), 6-2.
Angeles Montolio of Spain upset eighth-seeded Cara Black of Zimbabwe, 7-5, 6-3 and Argentinian Paola Suarez overcame Nadeja Ostrovskaya of Belarus, 6-2, 6-3.
In first-round play, third- eed Amelie Mauresmo of France beat Rita Kuti-Kis of Hungary, 7-5, 6-7 (2), 6-2 while Maria Sanchez-Lorenzo of Spain beat sixth-seeded Italian Silvia Farina 6-2, 6-4.
