Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Who will win the Wimbledon men's title?
Henman, Hewitt, Agassi or Sampras, who you can't write off because of his incredible record. It's tough to say one for certain.
You face Thomas Enqvist in the first round. What are your chances?
I'm hopeful. If I can keep my game together then I can get through.
The wild card system has sometimes been criticised as a free ride for lesser British players who might better be served by playing in the qualifiers. What do you think?
The wild card system has always been in the game and I don't see anything wrong with it. Goran Ivanisevic won the tournament last year and I think you'd find he's grateful. Mark Philippoussis is a wild card this year. There's no reason why wild cards can't do well.
Do eliminated British players generally support other compatriots left in the tournament?
Yes. Tim [Henman] and Greg [Rusedski] have their differences, of course, but I think they're blown out of all proportion by the media.
Can Martin Lee beat Pete Sampras in the first round?
He's in with a shout. It won't be easy but Sampras has lost something of his invincibility and if [Lee] can hang in there he could do it.
What changes would you make to British tennis to improve the country's chances?
People keep on about needing change, wanting to change everything but it's going in the right direction. Expectations of going from nowhere to being the best are unrealistic, it's not as if Britain was a major [tennis] nation recently. It's a slow process.
What's the worst thing that's ever happened to you on a tennis court?
I've fallen over. But there haven't been any really shocking defeats or anything you'd say was really terrible.
Which sporting event would you pay the most amount of your own money to watch?
I'd pay a lot of money to see a Tyson-Lewis rematch. Or England in a World Cup final.
Who will win the World Cup?
Brazil.
Where do you stand on sex the day before a match?
I'm not bothered. If I feel like it then I will, if not then I won't. I don't think it makes any difference to the way you play.
