The women’s semi-finals get underway on day 10 at Wimbledon with world No 1 Ashleigh Barty in action.

The Australian is chasing her first final at SW19, and her second Grand Slam singles title having won the French Open in 2019. Standing in her way is Angelique Kerber, the 2018 champion, who taught her what it takes to get it done in a final three years ago at the 2018 Sydney Invitational, sparking a dominant run.

“I remember coming off the court and feeling like my level was close, but it wasn’t good enough,” Barty said. “That was almost a bit of a reset knowing I’m not far off, but I’m not there yet. I think the challenge of playing her in a semifinal of Wimbledon is an incredible opportunity, one that I’m really excited for. It’s not scary or overwhelming, it’s just exciting.”

Karolina Pliskova features in the other semi-final after defeating Viktorija Golubic in the quarter-finals. The Czech lost to Kerber in the final of the 2016 US Open and despite dropping out of the top 10 in the world for the first time in five years ahead of Wimbledon, the 29-year-old has been in outstanding form over the last 10 days and is yet to drop a set. She faces a daunting task though in the shape of hard-hitting Aryna Sabalenka, with the Belarusian appearing in her first ever semi-final at a Grand Slam.
