O'Donoghue carries women's hopes

Jane O'Donoghue ensured that there would be one British competitor in the second round of the women's singles by defeating Anna-Lena Groenefeld, of Germany, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4.

The 22-year-old Lancastrian, ranked 232 in the world, who also advanced to the second round last year, won an LTA play-off to receive a wild card.

"This is the best win of my career," O'Donoghue said after recovering from a poor start against her 42nd-ranked opponent. "All the hard work I've put in this last year and over many years has started to pay off."

At the end of the match, O'Donoghue waved to her coach, Phil Farlow, and then ran over to a spectator. "There was one lady in the crowd who was just going ballistic the whole match," she said. "She asked for an autograph, so I thought I'd better give her one. She gave me great support."
