Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Argentina completed a 5-0 rout of Sweden on Sunday to set up a Davis Cup quarter-final against defending champions Croatia who beat Austria. Juan Ignacio Chela beat 13th-ranked Thomas Johansson 6-4, 6-1 in the reverse singles, handing the Swede his second upset of the World Group tie. Jose Acasuso defeated Jonas Bjorkman 6-0, 6-1.

Chela, a reserve, took 55 minutes to defeat Johansson on outdoor clay at Parque Roca stadium. Both easily won service games until Chela broke Johansson for a 5-4 first-set lead when the Swede began to make unforced errors. Chela scored points with passing shots against the former Australian Open champion.

France also moved into April's quarter-finals, where they will play Russia, with a 3-2 win against Germany after dropping two meaningless singles on Sunday. France had clinched the World Group first-round tie on Saturday, leaving Germany's Tommy Haas to beat Michael Llodra 6-3, 6-3, and Rainer Schuettler to defeat Arnaud Clement 6-4, 6-3.
