Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Tim Henman crashed out of the Pacific Life Open Masters Series event at Indian Wells late last night after a straight-sets defeat to the Argentinian Agustin Calleri.

Henman, having won his first match of the year against Jan-Michael Gambill on Tuesday following his return from a shoulder injury which kept him out of the Australian Open and the Davis Cup tie with Australia, had no answer to the power and accuracy of Calleri's ground strokes.

The Argentinian won the first set 6-4. The second went to a tie-break. Henman had held the advantage at 4-3 but Calleri won two points on the Briton's serve and then served out for the match.

Henman, the 13th seed, was not the only seeded player to lose in the second round. The third seed, Spain's Juan Carlos Ferrero, and the No 4 seed, Switzerland's Roger Federer, also went out.

Ferrero lost 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 to the American qualifier Brian Vahaly, while Federer was beaten 7-5 7-6 by the Brazilian player Gustavo Kuerten, who now faces Calleri in the third round.
