From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. Your support makes all the difference. At the age of 36, Bob and Mike Bryan are showing no signs of slowing down. The American twins won the doubles competition at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals for the fourth time, at the O2 Arena in London last night, beating Ivan Dodig and Marcelo Melo 6-7, 6-2, 10-7 in the final, to make this the fourth season in which they have finished the year with 10 or more titles.
Although this was the 103rd title they have won together, the Bryans have not always performed at their best in the year-end championships, which they last won in 2009.
“Sometimes we’ve come in here feeling like we’re resting on our laurels a little bit, happy with the way the season has gone, and haven’t put a ton of focus on winning this,” Mike said. “This year I thought we did. We did play a little looser. We freed up our games a little bit and did go for our shots.”
It has been another remarkable year for the twins, who claimed the 100th title of their careers when they won the US Open. That victory meant they have now won at least one Grand Slam title every season for the last 10 years. By winning in Shanghai last month they also became the first doubles pair to win all nine Masters Series titles.
“Looking back at the year, we’re very proud of the way it went,” Mike said. “If we had to pick one highlight during this great season, it would probably have to be the US Open. It was just a milestone we were shooting for. One of our big goals coming into the year was to try to hit 100 titles. We did it, luckily, at our home Grand Slam.”
