Laura Robson's attempt to give Britain a double cause for celebration in Miami ended in disappointment last night. Robson and Lisa Raymond followed the triumphant Andy Murray on to court for the women's doubles final, but the 19-year-old Briton and the 39-year-old American were beaten 6-1, 7-6 by Russia's Nadia Petrova and Slovenia's Katarina Srebotnik.
Robson and Raymond, who had beaten Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci, the world's No 1 doubles pair, in the semi-finals, were up against it from the start and were broken three times by their experienced opponents in the opening set. They improved in the second set, but were unable to take advantage of an early break and eventually lost the tie-break 7-2.
Nevertheless, it was still a fine performance by the Briton and the American, who were playing together for the first time after Raymond's regular partner, Sam Stosur, became unavailable because of injury.
