From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

VENUS WILLIAMS continued her string of good performances at German tournaments when she defeated South Africa's Amanda Coetzer in straight sets to reach the semi-finals of the Betty Barclay Cup in Hamburg yesterday.

Williams overwhelmed the seventh seed, 6-4, 6-3, slamming aces past Coetzer midway through the second set in a match the American dominated with power. But the second seed's erratic forehand at times threatened to undermine the chance to reach her third successive final in Germany.

"I was just going for a lot today," said Williams. "I didn't hold back. I took a lot of risks."

Williams was joined in the semi-finals by France's Mary Pierce, who defeated Conchita Martinez of Spain, 6-4, 6-4, in an hour and 24 minutes. Pierce, the fourth seed, converted her third match point when Martinez mis-hit a backhand.

Williams next faces the winner from Spain's Arantxa Sanchez Vicario and Italy's Silvia Farian, while Pierce plays either Jana Novotna, the top seed, or the Austrian Barbara Schett.

Russia's Yevgeny Kafelnikov, who takes over as world No 1 next week, has pulled out of the German Open starting on Monday because of a viral infection.
