Sir: Steve Coppell's suggestions for rule changes could add to the enjoyment of the game as well as being more appropriate ways of dealing with contraventions. However, like many former footballers turned writers or commentators, he is over-protective in his general attitude to players' lack of discipline - he invites the public and referees to join him in this misplaced sympathy for avoidable misbehaviour.
