Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Doncaster
Doncaster hosts the first Sunday race meeting in Britain this weekend. As it would be illegal to charge entry for a race meeting the entry fee is to hear the band play, in this case the band of the Irish Guards. Seven races are scheduled and among the entertainments laid on are parades of heavy horses and a race for Shetland ponies. Cash betting on the day is not permitted. Betting for the meeting can be in cash at betting shops the previous day or through a credit account or by charge-card on the day. Or you can leave a deposit with a bookmaker the previous day.
How to get there: Racecourse is east of the town, off the A638 (M18, junctions 3/4). Bus link from Doncaster Central railway station, served by London King's Cross. Admission: Club pounds 10; Grandstand and Clocktower stand pounds 5. Entertainment starts at 10am. First race 2.05pm.
