Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Damon Hill will carry the burden of hope for a home victory in the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on 10 July. After the death of the former world champion, Ayrton Senna, Hill is Williams' standard bearer in the world drivers' championship which is led at present by the German, Michael Schumacher.

The heightened concern over safety in Formula One after the spate of recent accidents, two of which claimed the lives of Senna and the Austrian driver, Roland Ratzenberger, has been reflected in proposed changes to the Silverstone circuit.

They have been endorsed by the Grand Prix Drivers' Association and are awaiting the approval of FIA, the sport's world governing body.

The changes will tighten the entrances to Copse Corner, Stowe Corner, Abbey Curve, Priory and the pit lane, thereby reducing speed. In addition, gravel traps and tyre walls will be extended, and some kerbing lowered.

Silverstone can supply information on accommodation. The main hotels in the area are often booked months in advance, but the booking office can advise, particularly on bed and breakfast in the outlying villages.

There are camping sites adjacent to the circuit, booked on arrival. Silverstone also have arrangements for the disabled spectator.

Page and Moy Ltd, ofLeicester, organise return coaches from several towns to Silverstone. For example, London is pounds 18 and Manchester pounds 22. Their hospitality packages cost pounds 245 per person, with race tickets an extra pounds 115.

They also run helicopter flights to the circuit at pounds 265, as do Airtrack Services Ltd, of Uxbridge, for pounds 249 between the peak time of 9.30-10.30am and pounds 199 off peak. Airtrack offer two hospitality packages at pounds 199 and pounds 325.
