Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. This year's Open Championship from 14-17 July is being held for the third time in its history on the spectacular Ailsa Course at Turnberry. It is regarded as one of the world's great links courses with the Isle of Arran, Ailsa Crag and the Mull of Kintyre making for a superb backdrop.
The Open is an excellent event for spectators and if it produces anything like the finish when the tournament was first staged at Turnberry in 1977 the fans will be in for a rare treat.
That was the year Tom Watson narrowly defeated Jack Nicklaus after arguably the greatest final round in the Open or any other major championship.
Greg Norman will be defending the Open title he won at Royal St George's, Sandwich, last year, nine years after winning the championship for the first time on the Ailsa course.
Entrance tickets can be bought in advance from the Royal and Ancient up to 24 June or purchased on the day at Turnberry. Open Championships rarely close their gates so entry is possible even for the final round on Sunday.
Reserved seats on the 18th green for the week are sold out, but there is a public grandstand on the final green and around 14,000 free seats around the course.
Although most hotels are already booked, bed and breakfast accommodation and private accommodation in rented houses are still available. For the former contact the Ayrshire Tourist Board and the latter Cluttons Chartered Surveyors of Ayr.
Scot Rail will be running a Golflink service, combining rail transport to Girvan with coach to and from the course.
The Edinburgh-based Blue Chip Travel offer a range of weekend break packages for the Open, ranging from day trips at pounds 39 to three days with accommodation at pounds 185. All include entrance tickets to the course.
