Sir: In the midst of all the boardroom power struggling at Spurs, Alan Sugar demonstrated his ignorance of the game and its supporters. His assertion that 'if we win three or four games, the manager and the team become heroes and the cruel harsh reality is, maybe, Terry is forgotten' is an insult to Spurs supporters and Venables himself. It will take more than four victories to wipe out the memory of Venables's achievements at White Hart Lane. Without Venables Spurs would probably be in the hands of Robert Maxwell's creditors and looking at a future of mid-table obscurity. For football and Tottenham's sake let's get rid of artificial sweeteners. No Sugar and more Venables.
Yours sincerely,
