Meredith McGrath, the unseeded American, overpowered Kristie Boogert, the No 4 seed from the Netherlands, in an opening-round upset yesterday in the Moscow Women's Open indoor tournament at the Olympic Stadium. The 24-year-old from Midland, Michigan, who is ranked 113th in the world, played an almost error-free match in overcoming her 43rd-ranked opponent.
