Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Dundee United have completed the pounds 400,000 signing of Darlington's Canadian international central defender Jason Devos.

The Chelsea defender Franck Leboeuf has been invited to speak at the Oxford University Union on 18 October. The French international, who has also been deputising as Chelsea's captain in the absence of Dennis Wise, will face questions about his views on the state of football.

Igor Stimac and Mario Stanic will be back in the Croatian team for the European Championship qualifier against Macedonia in Zagreb today. Stimac, a central defender, missed Saturday's Group Eight win over Malta through injury and Stanic, a midfielder, was suspended. The versatile Stanic will probably partner Davor Suker in attack, with skipper Zvonimir Boban of Milan assuming a more attacking role. The Croatians will still be missing two strikers in Alen Boksic and Goran Vlaovic. Croatia lost their opening group match to the Republic of Ireland.

Croatia: D Ladic, I Stimac, I Tudor, D Simic, D Saric, R Jarni, Z Soldo, A Asanovic, Z Boban, D Suker, M Stanic.

Macedonia (probable): P Milosevski, G Lazarevski, M Stojkovski, G Sedloski, G Stavrevski, M Stojanovski, A Sakiri, T Micevski, R Bozinov, V Trenevski, S Zaharievski.

Croatia's Hajduk Split have had their stadium suspended for one European match in punishment for their supporters' misbehavior in a Uefa Cup match. The incidents took place during Hajduk's first round, second leg match against Fiorentina of Italy last month. The club will have to play their first home match when it next qualifies for a European competition at least 125 miles from Split, Uefa said in a statement. The panel also fined England 60,000 Swiss francs (pounds 30,000) for their supporters' behaviour during the team's 2-1 European Championship qualifying defeat in Sweden.
