STEVE STAUNTON has knee and ankle injuries and is doubtful for the Republic of Ireland's World Cup qualifier against Denmark in Copenhagen on Wednesday night.

THE Scotland manager, Andy Roxburgh, yesterday turned to Aberdeen's Gary Smith as defensive cover for his squad for the World Cup qualifier against Portugal on Wednesday. John Brown, of Rangers, was called up on Saturday after injuries to central defenders Dave McPherson (Rangers) and Alan McLaren (Hearts).

THE Tottenham forwards Darren Anderton and Nicky Barmby have withdrawn from England's squad for the Uefa Under-21 Championship qualifying match against Norway at Peterborough tomorrow. Aston Villa's Steve Froggatt and Everton's Matthew Jackson withdrew last week. The QPR forward Andrew Impey has been promoted from the standby list.

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY, on a short tour of South Africa, came from behind to beat Hellenic 2-1, with both goals coming from Paul Warhurst. The Cape Town side are managed by the former England forward, Johnny 'Budgie' Byrne.
