DARREN WEBBER, playing in only his second match for South Australia, scored an unbeaten century to lead his side's recovery on the opening day of the Sheffield Shield match with Queensland in Adelaide yesterday. Geoff Marsh and Mark Lavender, the Western Australia openers, both hit centuries in a record- breaking stand for their state in their Shield match against Victoria in Perth. Marsh, the fomer Test opener, scored an unbeaten 122 and Lavender, promoted ahead of the regular opener, Mike Veletta, made 103 as the pair piled on 223. They eclipsed Western Australia's previous best first-wicket stand against Victoria of 163 by Veletta and Mark McPhee in the 1986-87 season.

SHEFFIELD SHIELD (First of four days): (Adelaide): South Australia 312 for 7 (D Webber 119no, J Siddons 75) v Queensland. (Perth): Western Australia 265 for 2 (G Marsh 122no, M Lavender 103) v Victoria.
