THE Oakland Athletics third-base coach, Rene Lachemann, 47, has agreed to become the first manager of the Florida Marlins when the expansion team enter the National League next season. The Marlins believe Lachemann's knowledge of the game has grown during his six years as a coach for the A's manager, Tony La Russa, widely regarded as one of the game's best.
