Chesire overtook Cram, winner of the inaugural event last year, in the last 100 metres and held on for a narrow victory in 3min 57.20sec. Mary Decker-Slaney, of the United States, was a comfortable winner of the women's race. Leading from gun to tape, she finished nearly 10 seconds ahead Zola Budd- Pieterse.
