DENNIS BYRD, the New York Jets defensive end, underwent seven hours of surgery yesterday that successfully stabilized his spinal cord. He remains without motion in his legs and fingers and other portions of the left side of his upper body. Byrd broke his neck in Sunday's game against the Kansas City Chiefs.
