Picabo Street became the first American to win a world championship downhill title when she sped to a superb victory in yesterday's women's event at the World Championships in Sierra Nevada, Spain.
The 24-year-old covered the 2.125-mile Veleta course in 1min 54.06sec, more than half a second ahead of Germany's Olympic champion Katja Seizinger, who finished in 1:54.63. American Hilary Lindh claimed the bronze in 1:54.70.
Seizinger took gold to Street's silver in the 1994 Olympic downhill.
